How to keep safe during pandemic

Updated: Feb 4, 2022

TRANSCRIPT:

As the coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19, reaches its 4th year of conquering the globe, people are left in a panic and are terrified because of the growing global alarm over Omicron, the new coronavirus variant that is believed to be the most infectious variant so far in the world. People are desperate to keep themselves and their loved ones safe during this seemingly endless pandemic. If you are one of these people, here are some ways to stay COVID-19 negative.

Clean your hands. Clean your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds specially after being in a public place or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer with 70% alcohol.

Practice social distance. To reduce the risk of infection, keep at least 6 feet (2 meters) of distance between yourself and others, even if they don't appear to be sick, to reduce the risk of infection. Maintain an even greater distance if you are in a public place. The further away, the better.

Avoid touching your face. Don't touch your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses.

Wear a properly fitted mask. Make sure your mask covers your nose, mouth, and chin when around others and when you have to go out in public. If you don't have a surgical mask, a cloth mask with a filter is a good alternative. A friendly reminder to clean your hands before you put your mask on, before and after you take it off, and after you touch it at any time. When you take off your mask, store it in a clean plastic bag, and every day either wash it if it's a fabric mask or dispose of it if it's a medical or surgical mask.

Check your health. If you feel there's something off with your body, seek medical attention immediately and follow the directions of rural health organizations.

Cover. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your bent elbow when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of used tissue properly and don't forget to wash your hands throughout.

Avoid the 3Cs: spaces that are closed, crowded, and involve close contact. The risk of getting COVID-19 is higher in crowded and poorly ventilated spaces.

Keep a clean home. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily to lessen the risk of getting COVID-19 through objects. Use detergents and soaps prior to disinfection.

Stay Healthy at Home. Eat healthy foods, hydrate, and exercise even if you are indoors. Stay informed. Learn what's happening in your community and keep up-to-date with health protocols. Be selective about your reading sources and avoid sharing fake news.

Get Vaccinated! Get your vaccines as soon as it's your turn and follow local guidance on vaccination. And remember, even if you're already vaccinated, you can still get the virus, so continue practicing the minimum health protocols.

By taking these practical steps, you can protect yourself and those around you. Together, we can fight the virus. And just like Dr. Varshavski always said, don't forget to stay safe, happy, and healthy!
